Member of the Romance branch of the
Indo-European language family originating in
NW Spain, in the provinces of Old and New
Castile. It is the basis of present-day
standard Spanish (see Spanish language) and
is often seen as the same language, the terms
castellano and espanol being used
interchangeably in both Spain and the
Spanish-speaking countries of the Americas.
